Duke of Edinburgh Award

We are delighted to offer our Year 9 and Year 10 students the opportunity to take part in the life-changing adventure of the Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh's Award respectively. In addition, students completing their Silver Award will also be offered the extended opportunity to be trained and qualified as a DofE Young Leader.

The DofE helps young people build lifelong belief in themselves, supporting them to take on their own challenges, follow their passions, and discover talents they never knew they had. Because when you prove to yourself that you’re ready for anything, nothing can hold you back.

Why do Duke of Edinburgh?

The DofE is non-competitive and a powerful way for every young person to build belief in themselves, whatever their background, interests and abilities. It gives young people the chance to make new friends, follow their passions, learn new skills and make a difference to the community. Achieving a DofE Award is a great way to impress employers too. It helps young people to see themselves differently and gain a new level of confidence. We always say that after taking on your DofE, you know that whatever life throws at you, you’re ready to deal with it.

How it works

To achieve the Award, you first select and set objectives in each of the following areas:

  • Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or the community.
  • Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities.
  • Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests.
  • Expedition: planning, training for and completing an expedition.

Every young person’s DofE programme is personal to them - they can choose what they’d like to do for their Skills, Volunteering and Physical sections, and most activities can count. We will provide guidance and support, and students can either choose to continue an activity they already do or discover something completely new. Activity ideas can be found on the Duke of Edinburgh website here: Ideas for Activities - The Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

Pupils should complete one hour a week for each activity over a set period of time, so they can fit it around studying, hobbies and social lives.

Expedition

The Expedition section involves passing a qualifying expedition where pupils are assessed against Duke of Edinburgh requirements which can be found here:

Expedition Requirements | DofE

In preparation for this, pupils will have completed a series of bespoke expedition training sessions delivered in house by our qualified staff and taking place during both standard and extra-curricular school hours. Sessions will cover topics such as:

  • First aid, Health & Safety, Packing, Food & Equipment
  • Navigation & Route Planning
  • Countryside Code
